From the ruins of Alfashir, streams of people continue to flee the massacres, trudging across miles of barren land toward makeshift camps.

Many arrive with nothing but exhaustion and grief; among them are children separated from their families, witnesses to horrors no one should see.

Aid workers describe scenes of utter desperation, bodies weakened by hunger and shock, camps straining to cope.

On Monday, famine was officially declared in Alfashir and another part of Sudan, a grim confirmation of what relief agencies have been warning for months.

Conflict has gutted supply routes, and relief convoys are barely reaching those in need.

What began as a war between rival generals has spiraled into a humanitarian calamity, one measured now not only in the dead, but in the starving.
