A UN report released on July 24th warns that Afghans forcibly returned—mainly from Pakistan and Iran—face serious human rights abuses under Taliban rule.

Based on 49 interviews, returnees, especially women, former officials, and journalists, report torture, arbitrary detention, and persecution.

One woman described life back in Afghanistan as “house detention.”

The report says such deportations violate international law and urges states to halt returns, provide safe pathways, and fund reintegration.

Despite Taliban claims of amnesty, abuses persist.

The UN calls for urgent action to protect returnees and uphold basic rights.
