A cruel return to chaos in Haiti

Despite spiraling violence in Haiti, the Trump administration moved last month to end temporary protected status (TPS) for some 500,000 Haitians five months early, claiming conditions have improved.

The claim is contradicted not only by independent observers but by the administration’s warnings: U.S. flights have been grounded due to gang fire, and the State Department urges Americans to flee.

On the ground, the reality is grim. Gangs control most of Port-au-Prince, killings are rampant, and over a million people are displaced.

The DHS itself acknowledges the breakdown of order yet argues TPS must end for “national interest.”

That rationale rings hollow.

Repatriating half a million people to a failed state is not only inhumane; it risks further destabilization.

Temporary protected status exists for precisely such emergencies. Pretending otherwise does not make the danger go away.
