The United Nations Human Rights Council opened its sixty first regular session on 23 February 2026.

Feb. 23 In a pivotal address delivered at the High-level segment of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk outlined the precarious state of global human rights against a backdrop of escalating power struggles.

1- A Shifting Global Landscape: The current global panorama is characterized by fierce competition for dominance and essential resources, which cultivates anxiety and insecurity among populations worldwide.

2- Human Rights as a Core Principle: Türk stressed the importance of dignity, equality, and justice, asserting that these values are fundamental to human existence and serve as a bulwark against the rise of autocracy.

3- Normalization of Conflict: He condemned the alarming normalization of violence in international disputes and the disregard for laws of war, which has led to widespread suffering among civilians. Accountability in conflict zones such as Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine is essential if humanity is to avert a dismal future where violations become commonplace.

4- Urgent International Response: Türk called upon the global community to mobilize swiftly against egregious human rights violations and to prioritize human rights in peace negotiations as part of any resolution.

5- The Rise of Grassroots Activism: He highlighted the significant role of women and youth in advocating for rights and equality, who continue to galvanize community support and demonstrate solidarity against various forms of injustice worldwide.

6- A Historical Perspective: The roots of human rights activism extend well beyond formal declarations, reflecting a long-standing struggle for equality and self-determination, a narrative woven throughout history.

7- Unity Against Despotism: Türk decried selective interventions in response to violations of international law, advocating instead for a universal approach to ensure accountability and safeguard human rights for all.

8- Formation of a Global Coalition: Plans are underway to establish a multi-stakeholder coalition aimed at promoting collective rights and strengthening grassroots movements in opposition to authoritarianism.

9- An Unyielding Commitment: Finally, Türk reiterated that the defense of human rights remains non-negotiable. Ongoing advocacy is paramount to ensure that the rights of individuals are recognized and protected universally.

In summary, the High Commissioner’s remarks call for a renewed commitment to human rights in these turbulent times, urging both immediate action and sustained efforts to foster a just and equitable world.
