Goma — home to around 2 million people and now hosting several hundred thousands of displaced people — is facing a food shortage, as most roads leading into and out of Goma have been cut off.

Aid operations by UN aid agencies such as WFP have been hampered significantly as residents and the Congolese government are increasingly hostile against UN and western institutions.

150,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of February alone, seeking shelter in Goma, according to Save the Children.

The unrest in North Kivu also provoked protests in the capital Kinshasa over several days, with protesters burning a UN vehicle and trying to enter the French embassy, over Western countries’ perceived support of the Rwandan gov’t.
