U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
The communication took place via video link.
According to Reuters” Xi told Bachelet that China’s development of human rights “suits its own national conditions”, and that among the various types of human rights, the rights to subsistence and development were primary for developing countries.”
“Deviating from reality and copying wholesale the institutional model of other countries will not only fit badly with the local conditions but also bring disastrous consequences,” Xi Jinping told Bachelet.
Bachelet arrived in China on Monday for a six-day visit.
The US has warned it was “deeply concerned” about Bachelet’s visit based on an understanding of restrictions the UN chief will be subjected to in China.
“For me, it is a priority to engage with the government of China directly, on human rights issues, domestic, regional and global,” Bachelet said.
Bachelet will visit Xinjiang region where human rights groups accuse China of human rights abuses against mainly Muslim Uyghurs.
According to Reuters, she will not have media representatives traveling with her.
China’s ruling Communist Party is accused of confining people to internment camps, forcibly separating families and carrying out forced sterilisations in Xinjiang.
Bachelet will issue a statement and hold a presser on May 28th at the end of the visit.
This is the first visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to China since 2005.
