Amnesty International released a new report on Monday about alleged human rights violations in Papua, the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia.
The report highlights alleged human rights violations in Intan Jaya Regency, Papua and their relation to plans to mine the Wabu Block gold deposit.
“The planned development of Wabu Block risks aggravating a rapidly deteriorating human rights situation,” said Usman Hamid, executive director of Amnesty International in Indonesia. https://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanplus-news/2022/03/21/report-by-amnesty-international-say-that-planned-gold-mine-worsens-abuses-in-indonesia039s-papua
“The mine is believed to have gold ore deposits of about 117.26 million tons, according to a 1999 survey by U.S. mining company Freeport-McMoRan.” Benar News said. https://www.benarnews.org/english/news/indonesian/gold-mine-03212022104952.html
On March 17, around 100 members of an ultranationalist group called “Laskar Merah Putih” (Red and White Paramilitary) protested in front of Amnesty’s office in Indonesia.
In their letter of statement, they said human rights organisations unfairly attack Indonesian police and army, who are protecting Indonesian rights in Papua.
They accuse human rights organisations like Amnesty of meddling with “Indonesian unity”.
