AMNESTY/ TIGRAY REPORT

Published on: 28 February, 2021

Amnesty releases a report investigating the involvement of Eritrean troops in Tigray and contends that Ethiopian and Eritrean troops carried out multiple war crimes in their offensive to take control of Axum.

Based on witness testimony and satellite image analysis, the report documents that Eritrean troops killed hundreds of unarmed civilians in the city of Axum on 28-29 November 2020, opening fire in the streets and conducting house-to-house raids in a massacre that may amount to a crime against humanity.

The Ethiopian government’s narrative on Eritreans involvement has shifted over time – from outright denial to claiming that Eritrean forces have acted without being knowledge of Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia has declared the military operation was over on November 28th, there have been sporadic clashes between the government forces and fighters loyal to TPLF.

More than 60,000 Ethiopians fled the fighting to Sudan, hundreds of thousands of civilians have also been reported to have become internally displaced and are in dire need of emergency assistance.
